These two images were my first painted cards for what would become The Wheel of Change Tarot. There are no dates associated with the paintings but they were likely painted in 1986 or 7 and were my first attempts at getting my ideas on to paper.
The Moon seen here was the first card, followed shortly by The Star. I had just begun to paint with water colors and so struggled with the medium. I am an entirely self taught artist and taught myself to draw, paint, embroider, etc. I had a few Art classes at Sonoma State University (then College) as a part of the requirements for my Art History degree, but I was told again and again that I worked too small. I was constantly given large paper and told to fill it. As a stubborn 18 and 19 year old (not much has changed there!) I flatly refused and still drew my tiny illustrative drawings. I never got very good grades in Art practice classes while acing my Art History classes every time.
As the years painting went by the quality of the paintings improved. I repainted in total about 15 of the cards and it is the second (in some cases 3rd) version published in the WOC cards. Some of the early cards are obvious; 4 Disks, 4 Wands, 9 Disks... Some of the later cards are just as obvious; 10 Swords, Prince of Swords. Over a ten year period painting regularly I got to be a better painter.
